ESAS Training Services
Cork Ecology offer ESAS accredited training courses for seabird and marine mammal surveys and also data entry training. Courses are flexible and can be adapted to suit the attendees.
Seabird and marine mammal surveys (ESAS accredited)
In the last 30 years, a standard method of counting seabirds and marine mammals from ships has been adopted in Europe. Participating countries contribute data to the European Seabirds at Sea (ESAS) database which is maintained by the JNCC's Seabirds At Sea Team.
This course is designed to train marine surveyors to an ESAS accepted standard, ensuring good quality data is collected, which may be included in the ESAS database. A flexible approach to training will be adopted, depending on previous experience and individual circumstances.
NB - the ESAS training course is not a seabird identification course, although seabird ID will be assessed during the course and any lack in proficiency will be highlighted. Trainees are expected to have good seabird identification skills prior to doing the ESAS training course.
Data entry
This course is designed to compliment the marine survey methods training course detailed above. The course assumes that clients will be following the JNCC method of data entry and data collation using the database programme Paradox. The course covers basic data entry methods.
Follow up support and troubleshooting is also available, as required.
Further details of both courses are available on request.
